Having recently immigrated to Colorado from The Bahamas I’m constantly inspired by my new surroundings and the dramatic differences between not just the ocean and the mountains, but the local plants and animals and the landscape itself.
Drawing on elements that are local to Colorado but not necessarily familiar to locals, my new work is inspired by Colorado state flora and fauna. Some might be aware that the state flower is the Rocky Mountain Columbine and the state animal the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, but what about the state fossil being the Stegosaurus or the Western Painted Turtle the state reptile?
Shining the spotlight on certain parts of our world makes them stand out against the background. Through illustration, painting, screen printing and exploration of organic shapes and patterns, I seek to present these objects in a way which leads to seeing them with fresh eyes.
By creating artwork from my observations I develop a deeper understanding of my new home.
